From assistant coach to several college and NFL teams, to leading the Washington Redskins to three Super Bowl Championships, Joe Gibbs turned his attentions to a brand new sport in 1992. The eponymous Joe Gibbs Racing claimed its first victory a year later in the 1993 Daytona 500. The growth and success of JGR has been extraordinary ever since, winning four NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championships and expanding from a single car operation to four teams in the 2015 season. Joe Gibbs Racing has been built into one of NASCAR’s most successful multi-team racing organisations. Despite its immense growth, the company remains defined by the same principles of its founder: integrity, a relentless work ethic, determination, perseverance and team building.
Born in Cambridge, Wisconsin, Matt Kensethbegan his prolific racing career at the age of 16. In 1997, Matt started driving in the XFINITY Series, taking the NASCAR world by storm. Determined to succeed in one of the world’s toughest motorsports, he earned himself the honour of 2003 Cup Title. Matt’s victory in the 2012 Daytona 500 made him one of only nine drivers to have won the famed race more than once. Amongst his enviable list of wins, this resilient sportsman boasts an International Race of Champions title in 2004, as well as 31 victories in the Cup Series. He has also won an outstanding 29 times in the NASCAR XfinitySeries races. Last year marked Matt’s third season behind the wheel of the No. 20 Toyota at Joe Gibbs Racing, paired once again with crew chief Jason Ratcliff. In 2015, he earned a career-high four pole awards and captured five magnificent wins.
Sumter-born Jason Ratcliff cut his teeth working as a technician on mini-and sprint cars. His professional racing breakthrough came in 1995, when he joined Sadler Racing in Nashville, as a mechanic and rear tyre changer in the XFINITY Series. Now, as Crew Chief for his formidable team, 2016 marks the fifth season that Jason will sit atop the pit box, calling the shots for the No. 20 Toyota Camry. This year sees him once again paired with 2003 NASCAR Champion, Matt Kenseth. An exceptional partnership, the duo kicked off in superlative style when Matt took home a career-and season-best seven victories in 2013. From that point, under Jason’s strong leadership, Matt and the No. 20 General/DEWALTteam has qualified for the Chase for the Sprint Cup every single year, with five outstanding wins and 12 top five finishes in 2015.
